Student Dress Code

Based on the belief that a school is a place of business where students are learning both academic and social skills, it is our intent and responsibility to provide a safe campus for all of our children and staff. We, therefore, require that they dress appropriately.

Clothing should be suitable for school. This includes wearing shoes with socks and clothing that permits full and safe participation during recess, noon recess, and physical education activities. Shoes or boots with high elevated heels, sandals, flip-flops, and open-toed shoes are not safe for children at school.

The following are not acceptable for wear at school:

  • Halter tops, tube tops, bare midriffs, mid-cut shirts, and scooped-out tank tops
  • Clothing that advertises such substances as alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs
  • Clothing that utilizes double play on words, obscenities, profanity, or is suggestive in any way
  • Very short shorts and bicycle shorts, underwear must be covered with clothing at all times

Law enforcement agencies have identified the following as dress standards that affect the safety of students. They are therefore not permitted to wear at school:

  • Clothing that contains symbols of violence, sex, narcotics, alcohol or tobacco, vandalism, and other acts of crime
  • Clothing that contains elements such as symbols, signs, slogans, or words that degrade any culture, gender, religion, or ethnic values
  • Gang-style wear includes monikers, bandannas, hair nets, webbed belts with initials or any combination of letters defined as gang-related by law enforcement on the belt
  • Clothing that exposes underwear
  • Shower caps or rollers
  • See-through mesh shirts

In the event a student's attire does not conform to the dress code, parents will be contacted to bring or send a change of clothing to school. If violations persist, a parent conference will be held. This statement is in keeping with the Cheremoya Avenue School Dress Code Policy in order to provide the best possible instructional atmosphere for all children and adults at our school. There are exceptions to these guidelines for special Attendance Theme Days such as Pajama Day.
